Trailer Time: Is Novelty Enough?

I’m not much of a gamer.  I’ve played some video games and seen enough of them to recognize the similitude, but I’m really not much of a gamer.  I feel like I’m not the right audience for this trailer.  Watch to see why:

This trailer reminds me of some of the more recently released games I’ve seen and reminds me even more of some of the advertisements I’ve seen for fantasy video games lately.  That doesn’t make me want to buy a book, but I suspect that connection will work for other readers of fantasy.

After watching this video, I can’t help but ask:

  • What is the story about?
  • Who are the characters?
  • And who are these critics that are being quoted?

The trailer doesn’t give us the answers and I find that very disappointing.  So, for those of you who are into gaming and have probably done far more of the fantasy gaming than I have ever done, does the trailer’s relationship to gaming make up for the lack of insight into story?
