So, I’ve sent Part 1 of my memoir off to my first set of beta readers. Part 2 is with my husband. I’ve organized the material for Part 3 to be consistent with the chapter lengths and styles of Parts 1 and 2, even though it will be a manifesto instead of a story.
Here’s the problem: Part 1 is 18 chapters long. Part 3 fell out to be exactly 18 chapters long, too, though that could change as it’s drafted. Part 2, on the other hand, is 24 chapters long.
Jonesin’ is an American colloquialism for craving or wanting. I want symmetry! If Parts 1 & 3 didn’t match up so nicely and if I didn’t know Part 2 was a bit cumbersome in spots, then this feeling probably wouldn’t be so strong. As it is, my mind is grappling with the unwieldy task of finding a way to eliminate 1/4th of Part 2, even though it’s time to let it sit and be and be read by someone else’s eyes for a change.
