Recovery Stage 6: Swabbing the Deck

You’ve set your course, you’re steering the ship, and now it’s time to get dirty. The point of this extended metaphor is that there are things we have to do that we don’t want to do and that we struggle to do despite the fact that we know we have to do them. I’m not entirely sure what swabbing is, but I’m fairly confident there wouldn’t be a deck without it.

As much as marketing is mostly a want, there’s a time and place where marketing is a need. Marketing is a need if:

  • You are a freelancer.
  • You have a published book.

Under these two conditions, marketing is a need no matter how much you’d rather be doing something else, anything else, even swabbing the deck of a pirate ship captained by a one-legged, one-eyed parrot.

No excuses. No escapes. Make a list of marketing tasks you can do with the energy and time you have available today. Pick one and do it.

There. You’re done. It’s really that easy.

Don’t you feel better now?
